 Billy Gilman is currently serving his fifth term as the Muscular Dystrophy Association's National Youth Chairman. Billy joined the MDA in their fight against neuromuscular diseases in 2003, the same year that he released an album based on the poetry of the MDA's then National Goodwill Ambassador Mattie J.T. Stepanek. 'Music Through Heartsongs' was a collaborative effort between Gilman and Stepanek that made headlines around the world.
"When I heard Mattie's amazing story and his beautiful poetry, I knew I had to do what I could to get his message out to as many people as possible," Gilman said."I have always felt that music has a healing power, and I was very excited about the opportunity of putting Mattie's words to music and sharing them with the world."
The Muscular Dystrophy Association is a voluntary health agency -- a dedicated partnership between scientists and concerned citizens aimed at conquering neuromuscular diseases that affect more than a million Americans. MDA combats neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive medical and community services, and far-reaching professional and public health education.
"I'm truly honored to continue serving as MDA National Youth Chairperson," Gilman said. "It's been an awesome experience meeting and working with young people across the country and encouraging them to share their time, talent and energy with the Muscular Dystrophy Association. They've responded in so many ways, and it's very rewarding to see the outpouring of support MDA has been receiving."
Since joining the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Billy has dedicated his time to interviews and appearances at sponsor and volunteer events for the MDA. Including Events that he has himself hosted in his own home town. Each year as the MDA's national youth chairman, Billy has dedicated his Labor Day weekend to helping host the annual Jerry Lewis Telethon.
